📜 History & Origin

The history of Onam is centered around the legend of the benevolent Asura King Mahabali, who once ruled Kerala. His reign was known for peace, prosperity, and equality. However, the Gods grew jealous of his growing power and appealed to Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnu took the avatar of Vamana (a dwarf Brahmin) and approached Mahabali while he was performing a yagna. Vamana asked for three paces of land. The generous king agreed.

Vamana then grew to a cosmic size, covering the earth with one step and the heavens with the second. With nowhere left for the third step, Mahabali offered his own head. Vishnu pushed him down to the netherworld (Patala) but, pleased with his devotion, granted him a boon to visit his beloved subjects once a year. Onam marks the annual homecoming of King Mahabali.

✨ Significance

Onam is the official state festival of Kerala and the biggest harvest festival in the region. It marks the beginning of the Malayalam New Year (Chingam). Culturally, it is a secular festival celebrated by people of all religions and castes with equal enthusiasm, symbolizing unity, integrity, and the rich heritage of Kerala. It reminds people of a golden era of plenty and truth.

🎉 How it is Celebrated

Onam is a ten-day celebration starting from "Atham" and culminating on "Thiruvonam."

1. Pookkalam: People decorate their courtyards with intricate floral carpets (Rangoli) to welcome the King.
2. Vallam Kali: The famous Snake Boat Races are held on the Pampa River.
3. Pulikali: Performers paint themselves as tigers and dance to the beat of drums.
4. Onam Sadya: A grand vegetarian feast served on banana leaves featuring over 26 dishes.

🥥 Traditions

A key tradition is wearing new clothes, known as "Onakkodi" (typically traditional Kasavu sarees or mundus). Families gather to prepare the Onasadya, which includes delicacies like Avial, Sambar, Thoran, and Payasam. Swings (Oonjal) are tied on trees for children, and traditional games (Onakalikal) like Tug of War and Talappanthukali (ball game) are played.
