Ram Navami
đ History & Origin
The history of Ram Navami dates back to the Treta Yuga. King Dasharatha of Ayodhya performed the Putrakameshti Yagna to seek an heir. On the ninth day of Chaitra, Queen Kausalya gave birth to Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. The day is celebrated as Rama Janmotsav. In Southern India, this day is also celebrated as the wedding anniversary of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita (Sitarama Kalyanam).
⨠Significance
Significance lies in the character of Lord Rama, who is known as the embodiment of truth and morality. Celebrating Ram Navami is about invoking the virtues of honor, courage, and righteousness in our own lives. It is a major holiday in India, with Ayodhya (his birthplace) witnessing millions of pilgrims.
đ How it is Celebrated
Celebrations begin with offering water to the Sun God (Surya) in the early morning. Devotees visit temples, listen to the Ramayana or Ramcharitmanas recitals (Akhand Ramayan Path). In many places, grand processions (Shobha Yatras) are taken out with people dressed as Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman.
đĨĨ Traditions
Music and chanting are central to this festival. The most famous hymn sung on this day is the Shri Ram Chandra Kripalu Bhajman. Here are the lyrics for your prayer session:
"Shri Ram Chandra Kripalu Bhajman,
Haran Bhav Bhaya Darunam,
Navkanj Lochan, Kanj Mukh,
Kar Kanj Pad Kanjarunam."
Chanting "Om Shri Ramaya Namah" 108 times is also a common tradition.
đī¸ Puja Vidhi
Clean the home temple and place an idol or photo of the Ram Darbar. Offer Tulsi leaves, flowers, Roli, and sandalwood paste. Prepare Panakam (a sweet drink made of jaggery and pepper) and Neer Mor (spiced buttermilk) as Naivedyam (offering). Perform the Aarti at noon (12:00 PM), which is believed to be the exact time of Lord Rama's birth.
